I have noticed that on these forums when using the 'Mark forums read' button only the forum is marked as read not every thread within each forum. This is different operation to every other forum I use where marking forums read marks every thread in every board as read as well. I find this rather disconcerting. Is there a way via a single click on the main page to mark everything as read?

I don't think so, and I suspect that would be a major change, probably beyond my Perl skills.

Its a shame that it works like this because it really makes the mark all read button useless since when you take a look at a board you will see all previous new threads.
Maybe a request to the authors of the software to see if they can help.

We are not currently using the most up to date version, as I have made quite a few tweaks over the years, also the team who wrote the scripts split into two camps very acrimoniously so I am unsure which side to go with.
I have looked at dumping webapp completely, but to write something to migrate all the existing information to another platform would be a very major job and as I still have to work for a living time is not on my side to get it done.

For my twopence worth I can't see what all the fuss is about, it's not as though the forum is heavily used. And yes I do use other Forums that use the format stated by 'Broadstairs'.

There is the option at the bottom of each forum to 'Mark Posts as Read'. Just means you need to remember to do it in each individual forum.

I don't think you have to use the mark as read button(s) at all; I certainly don't. I just read the posts and leave the site. The next time I visit (for me usually the next day although I occasionally come back the same day) there are only new posts showing.

I agree its not a huge issue, but I thought worth raising it. Now I know the background to the development team its probably worth leaving it alone for now although perhaps some thought should be given to being prepared to move to a new better supported program if bigger problems arise in the future.
