Linking Multimedia to Source Citations

I use a single source per census (i.e method 2 in Ancestral Sources), and have a backlog of images to link to existing records.
My strong preference would be to link the images to the source citation rather than the census fact, but the way to achieve this isn't clear to me.
Is this possible?
What are the steps?
...and where is the documentation?
The reason I want to adopt this approach, is because each image is evidence to support the citation, rather than an image of the event / fact. Clearly this is a direct consequence of using 'method 2', but I prefer to avoid the number of sources that a 'method 1' approach would create in my circumstances.

I have nothing particularly against method 2 but in my opinion the number of sources created is a bit irrelevant really as you usually end up with more data added to your file with method 2 than with method 1. But to answer your question...
I'm not clear whether you're asking if its possible to add images to new census entries using your preferred method or to add to existing census entries.
There is not currently functionality to add images to existing entries though I plan to add this for the next version. A consequence of method 2 however is that it can be difficult to identify which citations relate to a particular census entry. If you're asking about adding new entries you can add images to citations as described below:
If you look under Tools->Options and go for the Census Settings - method 2 help page. You will want to tick the 'Link images to entries' and select 'Link to citations' (rather than 'link to facts'). If you only want the image linked to the citation of the census fact then also tick the 'Link to census fact/citation only' option. If instead you want the image linked to citations for all facts (e.g. for census, occupations, births, nationality, etc.) then tick the 'Link to all facts/citation'.
Hope this helps
Nick

Nick,
Thanks for the reply, and understand the comment about the methods, but having started to use method 2 some time ago, my preference is to continue. Moreover, I'm happy that I can see the settings for Ancestral Sources.
The query was about attaching multimedia records to the citations that I have already put into FH (which had no multimedia records attached at the time of their entry).
Its not obvious (to me) how to update these citations directly within FH, and so far I've been unable to find the explanation in the FH documentation...

Ah sorry and now I see this isn't in the Ancestral Sources forum it all makes sense.
In Family Historian use the Records Window. Find the individual concerned, find their census event and under it you'll see a list of fields such as date, place, age. You will also see Source. Right click on the word Source and 'Add Multimedia Object' then either 'Add Link to New Multimedia' or 'Add Link to Existing Multimedia'. Once you've done this you could right-click on the multimedia object, copy and then right-click on the source citation under another census event and click paste.

Nick,
Thanks ! I've just followed your instructions and it all seems ok.
A bit of feedback:
- Looking in the record window after the multimedia record has been added, and expanding the 'Source' for the relevant fact, there's little in the wording to indicate the multimedia record has been added to the Source Citation. May be something that could be presented more clearly?
- The original post also asked about documentation, so unless its hidden away somewhere, .. perhaps another opportunity for a little improvement in a subsequent FH update?
I'm pleased to read your comment about the functionality in the next release of Ancestral Sources (thinking.... should I wait for that??), and I appreciate the difficulty of identification. Personally I try to ensure every repeated source citation is identical (for census entries, my 'where within source' is a cut & paste of the main part of ancestry references e.g. 'HO107; Piece: 1852; Folio: 95; Page: 32').
Once again, many thanks.

I'd hope to get the new version out within a couple of months (but no promises).
Yes I expect census sources won't be too difficult to identify. The interesting thing will be when we get to other sources as to how people record the reference ID (where in source) for say a baptism record or a death.
Regarding your feedback, just checking that you do understand that I have nothing to do with Family Historian developers Calico Pie. I don't know how frequently Simon Orde (of Calico) reads these forums or whether the feedback will get to him. Perhaps it should be added to the wishlist requests?
Cheers

Nick,
The feedback wasn't intended to be to yourself, merely to record a view / suggestion on the forum.
I'll think on about whether to add to the wish list.
