Please can someone tell me the best way to save a diagram.

I have done a descendant diagram of an ancestor which I want to email to a relative, can I not just save the diagram as a gedcom or do I have to save the whole file. If I save as a pdf it comes very small.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

When you save as a PDF as a single page, you should be able to zoom in using the zoom tool in Acrobat.

Jane ,is there an advantage in saving a diagram as a PDF rather than a jPeg? I tried pdf's when first starting to e mail diagrams but some recipients had problems (possibly they did not have Adobe Reader? Not sure.) Anyhow,as soon as I started trying SaveAs Jpeg and e-mailing these the recipients were delighted with the ease of opening, viewing ,and zooming in. If a pdf has advantages I'll try again. Your comments welcome

The difference in the two types only becomes noticable with large diagrams. With a large diagram a JPG becomes unmanagebly big in pixel dimensions and image viewers might not be able to cope. To counter this, a user might typically change the scaling factor so that the text is smaller in the jpg. This then raises the issue that the text becomes hard to read. And at small sizes you also get compression artifacts affecting readability. With a pdf the diagram can get as large as 200'x200' and pdf readers (Adobe reader or Foxit) can easily cope with these large sizes. The file size doesn't get huge either.

In the past, pdfs weren't as common and IE could display jpgs so computer users didn't need to install extra software to view pictures, plus they had to get hold of the software via CD. Now-a-days, adobe reader is installed with just about every other software package and it's easier to install software via the Net. So I would go with pdf as a format to use for transferring diagrams.

Jon, Thanks for a most clear, concise, and helpful answer. I seem to have odd problems creating pdf files from diagrams but will persist ( I think it has something to do with the printer dialogue and selecting Copy to file) However when it does succeed it is a much better result than I have had with jpg copies.
Thanks again
