Every few years I have a look round to check out the best genealogy software, and this time, Family Historian has definitely won, largely on its interface and flexibility, but especially with the fantastic addition of Ancestral Sources. The combination reminds me of the relatively unknown programme 'Geves', which goes slightly further by linking information directly to the source material.

Anyway, I think I am about to move from an unhappy mix of Legacy and TMG to Family Historian, and I really look forward to future versions of Ancestral Sources that include Birth, Marriage and Death records in addition to the Census.

Nick - if you need a beta tester who will hassle you to include templates for Scottish vital records, including the truly astonishing 1855 'bonus',let me know!

1855 was the first year of civil registration in Scotland, and the first year's certificates contain huge amounts of information - I think they simplified them in subsequent years because they took so long to fill out. For example, death certificates include name; rank; profession; age; sex; place of birth; length of time in the current district; parents' names, rank and profession; name of husband or wife; a list of all children, in order of birth, with their ages; time, place and cause of death; burial place; and signature of informant.

Now that's what I call useful information [wink][smile]
