Can't read 'Getting Started'!

Post by arishmell » 02 Apr 2010 10:43

Firstly, many, many thanks to Nick for making Ancestral Sources freely available to us, and to Jane for giving us a Forum. I'm sure AS will even further enhance the attractions of Family Historian and I've been holding off entering censuses recently in anticipation.

But I've hit a problem already! Downloaded and installed on my desktop (WinXP, FH 4.1, windows firewall, AVG) and tried to use it, but when I click on the 'Getting Started' link I just get 'This program cannot display the webpage'. Nothing wrong with my internet connection - when I click on the 'Ancestral Sources Forum' link, I come straight here.

I've also installed it on my laptop (all the same specs, same wireless broadband connection) and it works perfectly.

Help! [eek]

Can't read 'Getting Started'!

Maureen,
Is it just the link to Getting Started with Ancestral Sources on the Welcome Screen, that isn't working on your desktop?  Have you also tried the Getting Started... option from the Help menu?  You can also use the Contents within Help.
I also use XP Home (SP3) and have no problem with any of these methods.

Strange - do the other help options work in the Help menu in Ancestral Sources? The Getting Started is a just page within a standard help file. If they don't work can you try accessing Help from the start menu in XP, under All Programs, Ancestral Sources? If you're not able to view the help file at all then what happens in Family Historian if you click on Help->Getting Started? i.e. is it just a problem with you viewing the Ancestral Sources help or is it all help files? Which Windows XP service pack do you have installed?

Problem solved! I downloaded the file again and had the same problem, and then downloaded a third time and changed the destination. It was (probably) a case of a too-long file path - I'd installed it in a sub-folder. Many thanks to Peter and Nick for offering support.
