Storing info offline

Post by aragorn » 31 May 2004 16:29

I have just reached 1000 individuals on my tree.I have a card index which I use as a backup to the computer ( I once lost everything and had to start from scratch) . This means I do not have to be on the computer to look through my files which is good as I have 2 teenagers and can't always use it. The only trouble is I have so much stuff on the computer that I have not got on the cards (sources , notes etc.).There is also the hassle of cross referencing the card info!
I have thought about using Individual Summary reports in ring binders as I can print out new sheets after updating.I am just wondering how other users store their information .[confused]

I have tended to print out family group sheets but as I have 280 families and each family group report could use up to 6 pages I realised that a lot of paper would be required and so I have not printed any for a while. If I were to print Individual summary reports for my almost 1000 individuals the amount of paper required would be much the same, but I suppose it would be easier to update an individual report on one sheet rather than a family report over 6 sheets.
I also sometimes print out diagrams showing one family to give me a pictorial understanding, trying to get each family on a single A4 sheet.
I don't have the problem of access to the computer, my sons have left home now, so it is not so important for me to have printed information but I too am interested in what others do.

Can't really help on this one as I do not print things out as a rule.

what one person did was to set up a report with the information they wanted for the index cards and then printed direct on to 'postcards' from the program for changed and new records.

I just back my data up to a USB drive (the type you carry on your keyring) cost about £20. The backup routine zips the file so it isn't large. Works fine for me so I don't tend to print anything out unless I need to. [grin]

I also save my tree on a USB storage device but I also like to have a physical record for quick look-ups etc.The problem with keeping everything on a storage device is that you always need a computer to access it and this is not always easy when you have 2 teenagers competing with you for the use of it!!!![tongue][confused][cry][mad]
