Family showing twice on diagram

Post by PeterWieland » 27 May 2004 23:30

Hi,

I am a new user of FH, and have come across a problem with the diagram.

My wife's great-grandfather was born illigitimately (no father recorded on the birth cert). His mother subsequently married, and her husband adopted him. He then married, had 8 children, his wife died and he re-married and had a further 4 children, including my wife's grandfather.

I entered the adoption as suggested in the manual (Added my wife's ggf to the new family, then All tab, Right click family etc.)

Now, when I show the diagram, all relatives option, my wife's ggf, his first wife and 8 children show twice. There are also a couple of squiggly lines joining proxy boxes.

Have I entered this relationship incorrectly, or is it a bug?

I think it may just be a function of the all relations chart.

You can 'turn off' the duplicate family by clicking the + on the line.

Where there are 'complicated' relationships families are some times repeated.

I will pass on the query and see what comes back.

Hi

It sounds as if you have entered the data correctly.  But it isn't a bug either.  If your wife's ggf appears in 2 families, first showing birth parents, and the second with adopting father, the program would be remiss if it didn't show (a) that your ggf's mother had 2 spouses, and (b) that your ggf occurred as child in both of them (adopted child in the second case).  It sounds as if what you want to do is to have the person occur in both positions, but with a clear visual indication that the people are duplicates (and without your wife's ggf's children appearing in both contexts).  At present, you pretty much have to handle duplicates yourself, by clicking the button to hide the children, and perhaps by using 'override text' to make it clear that this is a duplicate.  But several people have asked for more to be done to improve handling of duplicates in diagrams.  Its on our Wish List.  If its on the FHUG Wish List you could vote for it.  If not, you could add it...

Thanks for the prompt response. I will use the 'hide' method for now.

What do the squiggly lines joining some proxy boxes mean?
