Newbie question: First cousins marrying

Post by Rob » 28 Apr 2003 17:04

Hi all, I'm busy entering family data into newly-acquired FH - first time I've tried genealogy software. There seem to be a number of instances in my family's history where first cousins married, and although I enter these as Link Existing Record, the resulting family tree diagram has effectively two identical ancestries, one stretching back from each married cousin. Is this inherent in the system or is there a way to get a simple tree that splits with the original brother/sister and then rejoins in the next generation where cousins marry? Regards from enthused but confused, Rob

Hi Rob
You can use the expansion boxes to hide repeated branches that you don't want to show. Or there is a menu command 'Mark Repeated Ancestors' that will do this for you automatically, and will 'mark' each repeated ancestor distinctively (see the Diagram > Marks menu - you have to be looking at the Diagram Window to see the Diagram menu). You can override the default text if you want to add an annotation to show that repeated ancestors have been hidden. You can't get diagram branches to join up again in later generations though.

Newbie question: First cousins marrying

Simon, many thanks. I shall try out the repeated ancestor device. I was indeed looking for something that would enable a common grandparent to be linked diagrammatically to both husband and wife. By lopping off the ancestors from one or another this connection can be unclear. Is this something I could request in 2.2? Regards Rob
