Hello i'm new to this forum and have recently purchased FH I have three separate Gedcoms MY family tree My partners family tree and a combined family tree.

I also have these duplicated in FTM

In FTM the diagram for the combined families it shows all people in both families.

In FH it only shows my family tree members and the only way I can show all family members is to add them to this tree whereby they are linked to my partner and I as an extension

Am i doing something wrong or is the combined diagram not possible in FH?

If you have any children with your partner use one of them as the starting point for the diagram, that will show both families.

In FH, it's best to stick with a single Gedcom (or project) especially if there is any connection between different groups of families. Only if the projects are totally unconnected without any connections between the individuals, and also not much duplication of sources would it be advisable to use separate Gedcoms/projects.

In FH to get a combined diagram, select you and your partner and then choose the appropriate diagram.

Trouble is we have no children hence FH cannot make the link which is what i want to do.

I have found a kinda work around by adding my partners diagram tree to mine, but sems a long way round to do this.

There is no connections between the families, apart from my partner and me, I also have separate gedcom files as explained these get most of my research activities.

I assume then that FH does not include extended family chart like FTM and will have to settle with merging of two diagrams.

The important bit about my statement was the 'any' bit. There is a connection, you and your partner. If there are times when you only want to share the data for you or your partner, then you can use the split tree helper function to export the appropriate data.

I'm not sure how FTM works, but if you have multiple projects/files in FTM and it can produce a single chart combining these projects into one, then FH can't do a similar thing.

Since posting i have had a look around and the only way I can achieve a full diagram of both families is to add the relatives diagram the other family diagram or if I add a child of mine it would show all.

There is an option to produce an all diagram 'but the outcome is somewhat confusing.

Think the reason FTM works is because its representing An Extended family chart, whereas FT represents All relative diagram.

Its not a big issue can live with that

How can I select two separate families and then create the chart I want? I only seen to be able to open one then add the other.

You should be able to get a chart showing your and your partner's families, if you use the Ctrl key to select both you and your partner's records and then view the relevant diagram.  Similarly you can select your and your partner's Family record on the Families tab of the records window, and view a diagram based on that.

Thanks peter that's the easiest workaround.
