Until recently I didn't have any problems with saving my records. However, this has now become a major problem. Despite saving my work both whilst making entries and when closing the programme and making two copies, one on my hard drive and one on a USB stick, when I re-open FH the majority of the entries have disappeared. Initially, I thought this was to do with Gedcom Census but other pieces of information I have entered directly into FH have also not been saved. This started happening about six weeks ago on my FHv3 so I have updated to v4 hoping this would help but to no avail.
As I have now entered large amounts of information four times I am getting rather despondent.
Has anyone any idea what is going wrong?

This almost certainly means you've got two copies of your file and you're entering data into one and (naturally) not seeing it in the other.
In Family Historian 4 how do you open your file? Is it saved as a project? If you go to the File menu and choose 'Project Window' do you open it from there? If so then this means your file is (probably) stored in your Documents folder under:
Family Historian Projects\\.fh_data\.ged
(When you're viewing the file in Family Historian you can confirm this path by going to File->File Statistics and see what the File Name is)
If this is the file you're using then don't open any other copy of this file which might be elsewhere.
A number of people have been caught out when using Gedcom Census as they've not told GC that they're now using a new version of the GEDCOM file stored elsewhere. Of course this is not the fault of Gedcom Census. So in Gedcom Census go to File->Open and select the file by following the path reported by the File Statistics in Family Historian.
I hope this all makes sense!

To expand on Nicks point about how you start the program, make sure you ALWAYS start it the same way every time. It's possible to start FH by 1) selecting it from Window's Start menu and then selecting a Gedcom, 2) double clicking on a Gedcom file; 3) double clicking on a project file (v4 only).
If one time you select your Gedcom by using FH's File->Open menu and another time you double click a Gedcom file in Windows Explorer then it is technically possible to not select the same file if you aren't watching what you are doing. Don't worry I've done it occasionally when I haven't checked which folder I'm in when opening a Gedcom.
