Two record windows at the same time?

Post by RandyP » 08 Feb 2010 08:27

G'day, all! :)

I was doing some work on some families, and started to wonder if it was possible to have two record windows open at the same time, side by side, to facilitate copying and pasting data between members of the same family?

In this case, it's a city directory with entries for the pop, mum, and 2 kids - I was fortunate enough to have them all on the same page, a real nice bonus for a change. *grin* (I'm just copying the data over from the pop to the others.)

It would be faster than having to click in the focus window, selecting the tab, finding the appropraite data field, and pasting.

Might anyone know of a way to do this, please?

Thanks!

Two record windows at the same time?

It's not possible to have two record windows open. The record window is a special window in that it can't be closed, or opened. You could have two copies of FH running, both showing the record window. However it's not possible to copy/paste records between the two copies. See wish list item http://www.fhug.org.uk/wishlist/wldispl ... lwlref=319.

Alternatively, maybe using the merge process is something you should be using to combine the data.

Two record windows at the same time?

Aw, nuts. Okay, thanks, Jon! :)

Wouldn't merging be a lot of work just to combine one data entry with 3 others? It's a lot faster just to click, click, copy/paste. (Not to mention, still rather clumsy with this thing... ;) Always finding new ways to do things. *grin* )

Thanks again for the quick response! :)

Two record windows at the same time?

For copying information from one record to another, I often use the All tab of the Property box docked at the side of a relevant tree diagram.  I expand some or all of the field branches for the individual and use Ctrl-C to copy a whole branch, e.g. a Source citation with all of its sub-fields. I can then click on another individual on the diagram, go to their Property box and use Ctrl-V to paste the branch on to the appropriate part of their record, complete with all its sub-fields and their data.  This same pasting can simply be repeated for other individuals.  This is much quicker than pasting just the text from one field to another, and is mentioned on page 60 of the V3 manual (page 65 for V4).

In other cases I use a Query to display the relevant Individuals, again with a docked Property box for the copying and pasting.

That's useful information, Peter. I'll give that a try. Thanks! :)
