I'm being a bit thick I'm afraid!

Post by jmpjack » 28 Jan 2010 11:26

I want to put a copy of FH and my project onto a new Windows 7 computer. Do I use a USB stick to copy the project files onto and then just copy over or do I use the import command to get the files in the right place. I have alot of multimedia files and dont want to lose the links

Words of one syllable would help immensely!!!![grin][grin]
Thank you
Jackie

First install Family Historian on your new computer.

The project window will show you where the Family Historian Project Folder is on your new computer.

As long as all your media is in the Media Folder of your project, just copy the whole project folder to your key and then into the Family Historian Projects folder on your new computer.

Can I be a bit thick as well?

I've decided to move FH4 from my PC to a netbook.

What is the best way of doing this? I thought just reinstall FH4 from the download site and add my key but it doesn't like it.

Similarly, copying the whole .exe from the PC just gives rise to the message 'error in installation - retry'

Any help gratefully taken - thanks

Are you using a full installation or an upgrade? If an upgrade, you'll need to install those first on your netbook. You can't copy the program across, it needs to be installed.
See here for some tips if you have problems - http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id ... l_on_vista

Thanks John

It is V4 on the PC,which was a full install.

All I want to do is re install on my netbook, which runs XP.

I've had a look at your link, but can't see how it helps.

Sorry if I'm still being really thick

Can anyone else offer assistance?

It seems that I once had a V3 install (bought from the web)

Then a V4 upgrade, again bought on line.

Trying to re install V4 on a different machine seems beyond me [confused]

Thanks Helen

As I have no CDs, no V3 licence key and an invalid V4 licence key, not to mention no cd drive in the netbook, I'm left wondering if I have to re purchase from scratch. Doesn't seem right though, does it

You need to download the V3 Trial and then if you don't have a copy of the upgrade for V4 ask Calico to resend it. I think they can also resend your Licenses as well as long as both were Download licenses.

You will need both your License keys as well.

Thanks Jane and everyone else for their responses.

I've had a couple of emails from Calico this morning with licence keys and an idiots guide to installation.

I will try it when I get home tonight - can't wait [smile]
