Citations for beginners

Post by FishnChips » 28 Jan 2010 02:22

Can anyone talk me through these please.

I understand what they are, of course, you often see them in documents telling where information was found orginally.

But I cannot for the life of me understand how to do it in FH. I totally love the program and have done a lot with it but I cannot get it to do this.

I would assume I need to add a whole heap of citations such as Census 1881 Cheltenham and LDS etc. I found some kind of yellow window where I could add things but it seems longwinded so I assumed thats wrong.

And what is an automatic citation? That means nothing to me at all!

Many thanks for your time.

Source citations are easiest done when you enter the data, how ever you can do then in hindsight it just takes longer than doing them in the first place using Auto Source Citation.

If you use GedCom Census to enter Census information it automatically adds Sources for you.

See:
http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:index
for several Source Entry How Tos and check out
http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id ... ry:sources
for an introduction.

Once you have watched and read those if you still have questions please ask.

Thank you Jane. I can now see how to add a source.

But I still have no idea what 'automatic source citation' is. Is it something you must switch on and off all the time ?

Yes, you switch Auto Source Citation on and off (Tools/A Set Automatic Source Citation). Be careful! Although Auto Source is very useful and a time-saver, if you switch it on there is only a small reminder at the bottom right of the Source Window to tell you it is engaged. If Auto Source is inadvertently left on when you don't require it, Auto Source will link to data you are entering which you may not wish it too and you will have unpick the the links!

More information can be found at http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id ... e_citation

If you watch the Adding Data from a Birth certificate on the links I already posted this covers Automatic Source Citation.
