I've been trying to figure out a way to merge two GEDCOM files into one only copying specific fields. Let me explain.

Some time ago, I posted of the problems I was having with a downloaded GEDCOM from my family tree at Ancestry. As a result, I decided to rebuilt my tree by hand, adding in sources and doing additional research at the same time, taking the time to cite sources, et al.

An idea struck me the other day: would it be possible to merge the two files, but only globally specify certain fields, such as names, sex, BMD dates and locations, and leave the rest out to complete by hand?

I looked at the merge concept, but it would appear I'd have to do it totally by hand, and with over 500 people in the tree, it would take a while to do.

Would there be another way to do it, such as using the split tree function to specify what data would be included, and then merge the resulting file into the new tree?

OR am I stuck doing the entire thing by hand, line by line?

If you use the split tree helper you can delete every thing other than specific facts, make a copy of your file first (File/Gedcom Tasks/Save As) and then use the split tree to remove what you don't want or in your case just tell it to keep only the facts you want.
