Customised tabs on Property Box

Post by MrB » 17 Jan 2010 18:37

I have tried in vain to get the Military and Census downloads to work but in vain. Following the thread on 08/06/09 from the author of the customisation and the page long explanation from Jon Axtell about changing the PB-INDI file, expecting the Military and Census tabs to be there, they were not! Do all the sections in Notepad have to have a line space between each paragraph of text or need there be no separation? Do you have to add a tab in the customise section and then add the fact set data or are the tabs there automatically? Help!

Customised tabs on Property Box

Apologies for  butting into this thread.  I have a problem with the same property box.  I can get the box in FH. but when I enter in any data the box stays blank.  Where have I gone wrong please?

[confused]

Customised tabs on Property Box

MrB: There are several copies of the ini file as there is a backup. I would try adding a tab manually in FH and checking it appears in the file you are editing.

GreyFlyer: Can you confirm you did also download the Fact Set and install it?

Jane

Seems to be installed Ok as I get the tab and contents up. However any time I type anything in and click anywhere it goes blank. However in the 'ALL' tab the data I have entered shows in a line called Custom Event.

Probably a newbie problem.

I suspect you have not downloaded and installed the Military Fact Set which goes with the tab. You can get it from the Fact Set Area of the Downloads

I've downloaded and run Militry Fact Set 2, and reloaded the Property Box Customisation. It's all getting better but lines (like rank) still disappear when I move away from the page and then go back.

Have you checked you active facts in Work With Facts on the tool menu and that all the elements on your tab exist there.

Customised tabs on Property Box

Sorry I haven't replied to Jane sooner but I have been researching a relative who fathered twelve children from two wives in about as many years. I suppose they didn't have TV in the 1870's, not that there's much on nowadays but 'Lark Rise to Candleford' does provide a tongue in cheek look at how our relatives may have lived. (Pinot Noir talking here!) Back to the thread! I have done everything mentioned in the thread but have thrown in the towel. I have resorted to creating my own fields and labels for the tab. The 'edit custom item' option is a little time consuming to get the boxes the right length and in the right position but I am happy with the result and it works. When I look at the INDI file there doesn't seem to be any text evidence of my settings in Notepad. The old imported tab settings is what I see and despite editing them there is no change to the appearance in the property box. I just wonder whether there is a link-up problem with my set up. I am using XP sp3, FH v4 CD straight from the box installed over v2. Neil.

Neil,
I think I have the same OS as you (XP) and on my system the editable INDI Property Box file has the following address:
C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataCalico PieFamily HistorianProperty BoxPB-INDI.fhdata
Are you sure that this is the file you are looking at with Notepad?

PeterR, Thanks for the address of the PB-INDI.fhdata file. Yes this does correspond with my file location. It contains the details of the military and census tabs downloaded from the FH download site. Frustrated that I couldn't get the tabs to appear with the field data and labels, I had a go myself from scratch. However, the tab that I have created with the fields and labels doesn't seem to have a presence in notepad in any of the files in the property box folder. Neil

Make sure that the files that are being changed are NOT in the folder:
C:Program FilesFamily HistorianProperty Box

This folder contains the default versions of the property box's tabs and will get overwritten when an upgrade is installed.

Do a search of your computer for the file PB-INDI.fhdata. Right click on My Computer and select search, select All files, and enter PB-INDI.fhdata as the filename and ensure that search is Looking In all drives installed in your computer. Then wait a long time whilst it searches. Make sure that the file only appears in two places, the ones mentioned by Peter and me.

Jon.....I've got seven of them! Three in folder 'Property Box' modified last year before I installed FHv4(previously using v2), one in 'Program FilesFamily HistorianProperty Box' and three in Documents and Settings. One is the same address as given by PeterR, the second is where the extracted Military and Census files are and another with a similar address to PeterR but with 'Documents' instaed of 'Application Data'.[confused]Neil.
