Files on two computers

I mostly use a desktop for my FH and other files. Sometimes I use my husband's laptop and have copies (partly as a backup) on there too.

I know that I am in danger of adding info to FH while working on the laptop and then not transferring it to the desktop. If I then updated the laptop files from the destop those little bits would be lost (overwritten).

So far my solution to this has been to make all my files on the laptop 'read only' so I can't get carried away and add bits to them!

Is there a better way? Can I actually add different bits to each computer and still have them all safe? Sorry, I'm not very technical![rolleyes]

You can use a tool like synctoy, syncback or Dropbox, just search the forums for any of the above.

I have got into the habit of copying my .ged file to a usb memory stick after any session on either desktop or laptop. My first task when starting another session on either is to copy the .ged back to whichever. That way I have a current file on at least one computer and the memory stick as well. It works for me.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will investigate those, Jane thanks. Alan - you must be very disciplined to remember every time - I always worry I'll get carried away with excitement of new discoveries and forget the basic housekeeping!

I use Synchtoy between my desktop and laptop and it works fine. A single click and everything gets synchronised. very easy to set up you can download it from here
