Hello, I have a problem with my Family History 4.0! Which with the registration key was successful.

I did use the Special CD Backed installers, but as said, the installing was a success.

Problem now is I open the program, it crashes straight away, logo comes up and it tells me to either close it now or search for an online solution, which it does not find anything.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate on x64 bit, I have tried running the program under admin and XP SP(2,3) in compatibility mode, any help would be much appreciated !!

Well, folks, 4.0.2 didn't alter the situation.  To recap,  we have recently installed Windows 7.  Previously we have been using Family Historian versions 2.1.8, then 3.0.0., then 4.0.0.  These were lost during the installation of Windows 7, but the disks have been re-installed, with the help of the download for 2.1.8.

However, as Christopher said, when we open FH V4 a message appears saying it is not working and telling us to search on-line for a solution, but nothing further happens.

Help!!!

What Virus Checker and Firewall are you using.

There are known problems with Comodo, Panda and CA products and possibly other 'minor' products as well as several are 'badged' versions of each other.

I am using Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit with FH4 and I'm not suffering any problems.  Have you looked in the event viewer to see if the logs suggest a cause?

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit with F.H 4.0.2 with no problem, apart from the PDF option to print a chart tells me its not installed and that it does not work with Windows 98!

A second problem is that if I use novaPDF to create the PDF file it crashes F.H.

Thanks, Jane and other members who made helpful suggestions.  For your information, we are using ESET Smart Security 4 system which I disabled but it made no difference, so I went back to basics, uninstalled everything and started again with the disks for 2.1.8 onwards and the downloaded installation for 2.1.8.  We had a couple of warning moments on the way (couldn't find the installation language, but then did; a message that the V3 upgrade wasn't installed properly, but then apparently was), but V4 is now (I think) successfully installed (fingers crossed--you can tell from this that I am almost completely non-technical).

While uninstalling the previous programs I noticed that a trial version of V3 had also been installed somewhere along the line (I suspect my son, trying to be helpful!) and I see from the Family Historian Genealogy Software site that  this problem can occur if V4 is installed over a trial version, so perhaps that was the cause?

Do you have a full copy of NovaPDF or are you taking about the one supplied with FH? If it's a full copy it's probably confused the copy which installs with V4 of FH.

When FH crashes what error do you get, or does the program go non responding, what happens on my system some times is the Nova Window opens behind FH and I have to minimise FH to get to the PDF preferences window.

I use Cutepdf writer, plus PS2PDF converter, on Win 98, Xp, Vista and Win 7. Had no problems at all.
