Hi again.

After the travesty that was Ancestry, I decided to see if I could salvage my data and modify all the data/sources to remove the ancestry name without having to start over and re-document everything with the original source citations.

I've run into a little snag, and I'd like some opinions.

Here's a screenshot to start off with:



What I'd like to know is:

Can I remove/modify the:

A.. field (Ancestry.com)

and

P... field (Online publication, et al).

So far I've not been able to modify those fields, but I can with everything else.

The reason the fields are greyed out is that they are on the records.

If you make the left hand column wider it will show the actual field name.

The simplest way to delete them is to make a Custom Source Query select the field you want to clear and use the delete column trick (eg select the column and press the delete key).

I'm rather new to FH, and I've only gone through half of the tutorials so far, but figured it out.

This thing has the steepest learning curve of anything I've ever seen - but it's worth it.

One thing to note if you follow Jane's advice is that it will delete the field from all occurrences, even for fields that contain information you might want to keep in other sources not from Ancestry.

To edit the fields, you can click the yellow > button below the sources which will take you to the source itself where you can then edit the fields such as Author, Title and Publication details (the fields shown in your example). To delete the fields rather than just blank them out, click the All tab when the source record is in the property box and then select the field to delete and press the delete key and then confirm the deletion*.

And yes FH does have a very steep learning curve. [mad]

* The confirm deletion prompt is an unnecessary step now the FH has a proper undo facility.

Yes, I quickly found that out, and it's exactly what I wanted. I only kept the few occurrences where there was a compiled Ancestry database mentioned.

I must admit, Ancestry seems to have trouble with its own citations, repeating information and truncating sentences.
