* Saving a colour scheme.

I have, over the years, altered the colours, fonts, font sizes, etc., that I use on my charts, and in the Focus window.  In a couple of weeks' time, I am giving a talk about Family Historian to my local Family History Society.  This will involve projecting my monitor screen onto a wall.  Preliminary tests at home suggest that colours and font sizes that look nice on the monitor are no good for people viewing the same information on a wall.  My question is - is there a way I can save my current scheme, so that for the presentation I can have a different scheme, and then afterwards revert to my previous scheme?

I'm pretty sure that Family Historian does not itself provide a mechanism for exporting and importing Preferences, but it stores all such Preferences in the Windows Registry. This means that you can in theory save, and later restore, your current Preferences, but only if you are confident about modifying the Windows Registry. You should certainly first create a Restore Point or other backup of your Windows Registry. You can then use RegEdit to export the relevant branch:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareCalico PieFamily Historian

and save the resulting .reg file somewhere safe, with a suitable name e.g. Family Historian.reg. When you want to restore your original preferences, you can use RegEdit to import this saved file, or you should be able to double-click on the .reg file in Windows Explorer. Again, I advise backing up your Registry before doing the restore. And Family Historian should not be running during any of the above activities.

Why not just save whatever gedcom you want to use under a  different name, set it up with whatever schemes look best projected on a wall, then scrap it once your talk is over?  Your original will not be harmed in any way [grin]!

You might have to design a new text scheme if you want to change font sizes, but can't you just save your diagram as a custom diagram type and edit that?

PeterR:  Thank you for your suggestion.  I think that is the approach I will use [smile].

Maureen: I don’t think what you suggest will work, because (from what PeterR suggests) the “appearance” scheme (i.e. colours, font sizes, etc) is set at computer level, rather than at individual Gedcom file level.  This means that the Focus window, for example, of all my Gedcom files will have the same appearance while on my computer, but if I were to open one of my Gedcom files on a friend’s computer the Focus window would have his appearance scheme.  Thank you for your reply, though [smile].
