Having set up a customised tab (4 of them actually), I've decided that the names are too long...how do I edit the names???
Thanks!

One way would be to go to the text file that defines the tabs and edit the titles there (using Notepad or some other text editor).
On Windows 7, it is in C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Property Box\Pb-INDi.fhdata
(assuming you want to edit the property box for individuals).
Towards the top, you should see a line like
CustomPage1=''Censuses','
Change the equivalent of censuses to the shorter title that you want.

Hi Helen,
thanks for your reply...much appreciated!
I've found a folder called:
C:Program FilesFamily HistorianProperty Box
which contains 11 files one of which is PB-INDI. None of the 11 files contain the names of the 4 customised tabs which I've made.
To my inexperienced eye, the 11 files look as if my efforts with FH4 have left them untouched - everything there seems generic rather than specific to what I have done.
I don't really want to have to delete the tabs given all the work I've done...just to rename them! I should have thought more carefully at the start...ho hum.
Any more thoughts would be very welcome!
Kind regards,
William

In
C:Documents and Settings\Application DataCalico PieFamily HistorianProperty Box
change '' to 'All Users'. If you have difficulty in navigating the folder structure to find it you can copy the whole line into Explorer's address entry field. See below. Also ensure that you view hidden folders (Tools->Folder Options..., select the View tab and ensure the option 'Show hidden files and folders' is selected.

Thanks for all your help on this - Jon's suggestion of not navigating the folders and just pasting in the relevant folder structure worked a treat.
Thanks again!

I have been following this out of interest and I am still puzzled.
I have found the 9 fh data files as shown in Jon's reply but what do I do then please? None of them show the name of my custom tab which I have named 'flags'.
Maybe I'm being very dim but I cannot open any of these fh data files and have not been able to find my flags tab to alter it if I so wished.
Is anyone able to guide me please??

The text you want is inside on of those text files -- the one called Pb-INDi.fhdata
Open it with a text editor (e.g. Notepad) and towards the top, you should see a line like
CustomPage1=''Censuses','
where Censuses is the name of your tab, and can be changed if you want.

The names of the files will not give any clue as to tab names. The names of the files are related to the type of record, ie. INDI for individual, FAM for families, etc.
To view your custom tab details you need to use Notepad to view/edit the contents of the file. Under XP, it's in the Accessories program menu available from the Start button. In W7, it probably in a similar location. When Notepad is running, select File->Open and navigate to the Property Box folder or paste the C:Documents and Settings line into the file name field in the open file dialog and click open. Select the PB-INDI.fhdata file and click open (if your customised tab is to do with individuals). Then follow the instructions found in the previous post (
http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cg ... y&num=3806). Note that if you make a mistake it is liable to cause FH to crash so if you are in any doubt - backup first.

Helen & Jon,
Many thanks I have it now.
I had got as far as opening the property box with notepad but the property box was empty. Reason - I was only looking for .txt files, I had to change the 'file types' window to 'all files' before the required fh data files were displayed.
Elementary really, I said I may have been very dim and I was right. [oops]
Thanks once again.
