Images from Ancestry

Post by RandyP » 30 Dec 2009 02:31

Hi, everyone. :)

I'm new to FH4, and I remember reading a thread on the forums that suggested a program that would download images from Ancestry for importation into FH4, such as census records, photos, et al. I can't seem to find it now.

The reason I'm asking is because I'm becoming rather unhappy with Ancestry, but at the same time, I do not wish to lose the attached record data I have.

Any ideas on what the program was, or would I have to save each individual record to my computer?

Sorry if I haven't understood you request but you don't need a program to download Ancestry images.

With the image displayed click on the Save button and you should get the following:

Select Save this image and click Continue to choose the location to save the file.

I have downloaded many images from Ancestry - I right click on the image in Ancestry and select the first items 'Save Image to...' then select the folder, enter a file name and click save. It is then necessary to link your image in the usual way.

I hope this helps.

Do you mean that you have saved all your images, information etc. to a tree on Ancestry and now wish to move it away from there?

If so, I'm sorry, I can't help but maybe someone else will be able to if they know what you are trying to do.

Regards,

Thanks, but I'm aware of being able to save images to my computer when I browse them at Ancestry. With over 10 years of computer experience, and over a year in genealogy, I'm not that much of a newbie, thank you! ;)

[strike]I was referring to a program that mass-fetches all of the images listed in the Gedcom file and downloads them to your computer. Since all of the census records I have are at Ancestry, and are linked that way in the Gedcom file on my system, I'd like to find a way to get them without having to do each one of them individually.[/strike]

Edit: After spending hours searching here, I've come to the conclusion I must have misread something in one of the threads or on a program website. My apologies for the bother.

I have not seen a program to do this, but I believe if you download your tree it contains URL's to the images concerned. I have not tried it, but do those links take you direct to the images, if so it might be possible to use a macro tool like autohotkey to build a script to go through and download the images?

Yes, the links are included - I've verified that.

I don't think I've heard of autohotkey, but I get the gist of what you mean.

I did a search on Ancestry's boards, and found someone else who was asking much the same thing. No one there could offer any solutions, either, so I get the impression creating such a tool would be difficult.

Thank you for the idea, Jane. Maybe some some day a programmer can whip it up or include it as a function in the program. ;)
