V4 Upgrade (disk) stops on error 123
I have just received my upgrade disc. Installation is ok until I get to click on 'Install'. I then get 'Setup was unable to create the directory C:windowssystem32C:....'
On clicking the ok button I get a box saying 'Error 123 - the filename, directory name or volume label syntax in incorrect'. This is no surprise, as the unable to create box mentions what looks like, although curtailed, an impossible address with a filename starting C: I wonder if the installation disk is corrupted in some way, to make it try to create an impossible filename.
I have a normal PC running XP, with lots of space and memory.
I am really looking forward to moving to V4. HELP somebody please.

V4 Upgrade (disk) stops on error 123
Hi Jane
I'm getting the exactly the same error message which is:
error 123: the file name, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
I have tried to find the patch you directed in the previous users posting, but its coming up page not foundNot Found
Sorry the page you are trying to access has been moved in our recent housekeeping
Therefore I just cannot see the upgrade you are referring to. Would you mind reposting it here please? I'm unable to get to my email at the moment because I am reinstalling my computer and my email isn't working.
Many thanks
Liz

On the 'Page not found' page, select Downloads > Latest Free Upgrade (version 4 users only) and that takes you to the required download or better still on the top right-hand side of the page use the link 'V 4.0.2 Now Available' as this also gives you the details of what's in the upgrade.

V4 Upgrade (disk) stops on error 123
Hi John,
sorry it didn't work. It assumed I had already installed V4. I haven't because when I try the syntax error comes up, so I'm still on V3. I need the patch link that Jane made available for those having this trouble upgrading from V3 to V4.
thanks

V4 Upgrade (disk) stops on error 123
It's probably worth noting that the cause of the error is related to having an installation of FH that originally started with version 2. When I bought the upgrade from My History at the Scarborough Family History Fair in 2009, I happened to mention that I had used FH since version 2. I was then given a piece of paper entitled 'Users who originally bought v2 may get the Error 123' and went on to explain that if I did, I would need to download the patch and where to find it.
Having recently re-installed FH following a PC re-build, it's getting rather tedious, as I have to install the original Version 2.1.8 from CD, then upgrade to 3.0.0 from CD, then apply the patch from disc or memory stick, then upgrade to v4.0.0 from CD, then apply upgrade to v4.0.2 from disc or memory stick.

V4 Upgrade (disk) stops on error 123
Am just about to purchase V4 upgrade CD - and a little confused by the various postings re the 'error 123 etc' and which patch to apply, where to find it and when to apply ie before/during installation process. The thought of starting again fron V2 rather puts me off doing the change
I started with CD for V2, upgraded with a CD V3 and am now on V3.1.2 and thinking of going to V4
Is there an 'idiots' step-wise guide as to the steps to follow once I have the CD version 4 upgrade in my hands and am poised over the CD drive!!! to ensure a successful and trouble free upgrade.
Thanks
Derek

Most of this is covered at http://www.family-historian.co.uk/support/faq-inst# and it's worth reading through that whole set of questions before you start. You should also read http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cg ... ews&id=165 before you start, so that you understand the differences between V3 and V4 and can make sensible choice about the new Project structure and how to use it.
Before you start, you will need:
Step 1. Install version 2 from your CD. If you have a very old version of version 2 and anything other than a very old version of windows, you will need to do this using the relevant CD-based installer at http://www.family-historian.co.uk/suppo ... installers.
Step 2: Upgrade to version 3 and install the v3 licence key
Step 3: Upgrade to version 4 and install the V4 licence key. If you encounter an error at this point, go to http://www.family-historian.co.uk/faq/i ... g=en&id=19 and follow the instructions there.
Step 4: Apply the patch from http://www.family-historian.co.uk/downl ... ee-upgrade to upgrade to the latest version of version 4 (currently 4.0.2).
Before you start, you will need:
- Your version 2 CD
- (Very probably) a 'CD-based installer' from http://www.family-historian.co.uk/suppo ... installers
- Your Version 3 upgrade CD and the associated Licence Key
- Your version 4 upgrade media (CD or download) and the associated Licence Key
- The patch to upgrade to the latest version of V4 (currently 4.0.2) from http://www.family-historian.co.uk/downl ... ee-upgrade

Thanks for that - even I can understand it!!! - problem might be tracking down the licence key for V2
I suppose if all else fails I can fully uninstall and just buy the full version of V4 - a bit more expensive - but should guarantee to get me there

For V2 there were no license keys as it was only available on CD.
