I can see I will be getting in a muddle! I am happily using V4.0.2 and have several Projects for various families (unrelated to each other). My main computer is having problems, which I hope will soon be resolved and in the meantime I am using my husband's laptop, also with V4.0.2 installed.
Because I was used to working with V3 and saving Gedcom files I have been making quick backups on a memory stick of just the Gedcom file. That's fine and the backup is always up to date but I forsee a problem! ...
So my question is: When I get back to my main computer will I have to do a 'merge and compare' to update the Projects? OR can I replace the Gedcom in the Project with the up to date one I have on the memory stick?
And please can someone advise me what I should have done to avoid this problem. The computers are not networked together.

Project versus Gedcom file
If you have not added an new media to the Project, then you can simply copy the gedcom file, obviously if you have added extra pictures or source images you will need to ensure you move them back as well.
For myself I use a sync program to keep the whole project directory in line on the 3 computers I use all the time.
I used to use a USB Key in combination with SyncBack, but now only use Syncback for my full backups to External Harddrives, and leave Dropbox to keep all my computers in sync, but Dropbox requires all the computers you are using to have internet access.

If you store your media in the respective project folder, which is the recommended method, the best thing to do is to copy the whole folder across to your main computer when it is ready. (found in 'My documents' 'Family Historian Projects' in Win XP). This way any linked media is also copied overand you always have an up to date file.

Thanks for the replies. I haven't altered anything except the Gedcom files. Not added any photos or anything.
So in words of one sylable (for a numpty [oops]) can I replace the Gedcom file still in the Project with the same but updated one on my memory stick? If I do that will the photos still connect properly?

Can't think of any reason why not, but in future I would recommend copying the whole project folder to the key.

Thanks, Jane. I'll make sure to back up first and do it properly in the future!
