Customising multimedia record
Sarah,
The Multimedia Window already shows a list of linked Individual and Family records for each thumbnail you click on in the thumbnail view. If you double-click a thumbnail it shows the full-size picture, and you can then click on individual linked faces and it highlights that Individual in the list (or vice versa). You can select a different image by clicking in the Multimedia Records List whether viewing thumbnails or a full-size picture.

Sorry, but I think you've missed the point that you can have the Multimedia Property Box (with its fully-editable All tab) open and docked at the side of the existing Multimedia Window, thus already giving you the best of both worlds, like this:
