Printing diagrams

Post by GeneHunt59 » 23 Nov 2009 19:06

Hi,

I need to print a family tree. Howsever, the tree is too large and will need to be printed on 2 or more A4 pages - I don't have access to a colour A3 printer. I was wondering how other users had tackled this issue - is it difficult to set the print area, print, then tape the pages together. It does sound rather amateurish, and I doubt the results will look that good, but any advice will be much appreciated.

Regards

If you need to print over multiple pages, first turn on Page bondaries and adjust the page position and size, by left clicking on the page corners to move then and right clicking to zoom the chart on the page.

Personally I send my prints to my husband who has a Roll printer at work. There are also several companies who will print your chart for you. Both My History and Genealogy Printers, who advertise on this site will print your chart for you.

With care you can join A4 pages together very satisfactorily. I did one to take to a family reunion. It was 7 metres long!!!! and in plces 3 pages 'high'. The main problem was keeping it all in a line as you work along but, with the aid of a table edge, I did it. I then rolled it up to transport.

I was never intending this to be a 'best' tree. It was for people at the meeting to add others from their families. I provided coloured stickers for them to highlight themselves and pencils to add more people.

You do know you can reduce the size and re-order the lines so 'tuck everyone up' together I assume??

I found a rather unusual solution to the very wide and tall print out.

The scenario was - I knew that my family were going to be gathering at a Wake to celebrate an Uncle's life. It was agreed that I should do a print with him as the Focus. Unfortunately, the Family would only be together for a matter of hours in a Village Hall . . . .

I generated the Tree as required and made a note of the size. I then purchased a Net curtain from our local Indoor market {with a meter spare} and a spring of suitable length.

Once the print was done, I laid the pages out to ensure where they joined. I then pinned each page to the net curtain with a gap between each page and, finally, folded the whole thing up (it will not fold without a gap). At the wake, it took longer to find a place to hang it than to get it up and on show.

For this, I printed without a margin, and used rather thick lines. Everyone who looked was pleased and said they found no problem following the lines across the gaps.

The most pleasing part was that several people asked for that print before we left for home, so I folded it up and it was as reuseable later.

Have fun

Great idea, Bilko!

We had trouble finding a place for our long tree too. We managed to get 6 trestle tables in a row, in the end. The only other option was the floor - not a good idea with the combined ages of many of those present at the meeting!!!
