Use of flags to hide in Diagrams
I use the Living and Private flags to hide some or all data from web pages.
This can also be done in reports.
However, I cannot find a way to exclude relatives/branches from a tree based on the private flag. I am hiding certain text based on Living but how do I hide people completely as reports and web pages?
Surely I don't have to save a diagram and hide people individually? And of course this saved diagram would not change as I evolve the tree!

Nick,
There may be a better way, but it is possible to use the Set Marks using Query option from Marks on the Diagram menu. If you have a very simple query which finds all individuals with the Private Flag set, you can use that to automatically select all such individuals within your current diagram, and then use the Hide Selected Boxes option on the Diagram menu.

Thanks...yes that might well help me select them automatically rather than individually.
However, I'd still have to do this every time I display/print or save the Chart which would then not change with updates...
I'm hoping there is something more elegant or intuitive for such a simple requirement. I really just want to define a Chart that hides or closes branches for private people.
Another way of looking at the requirement is that I want to mark some people (private or some other way) to not be included in charts to make charts smaller...I have collected stuff about 'uninteresting' spouses of family that is useful to record but not to present.

Don't forget you can always save your custom chart once you have hidden the ones you don't want.

Yes but I understand Saved Charts will not change when I add new relatives to the database...I need a Custom Diagram or easy option to hide flagged.

In fact I just tested...I saved a chart for the youngest relative's ancestors. I added a child for her and then opened the saved chart. The new relative is recognised but was not expanded...I just see an expansion button.
...even if I could figure how to expand all...this would defeat the object as I want hidden people to remain closed (not expanded)...
...the first suggestion is still the easiest so far but in no way elegant !
EDIT: BTW, the reason I am doing this is because I see no way to publish a tree on the web...the reports only show ancestors or descendants - not both and there is no Pedigree Chart so I'm outputting some PDFs of charts for the web...am I missing a better way to publish all relationships?

Nick,
If you want tree diagrams, you could look at using GedMill from http://www.logicmill.com to create your webpage... I use a combination of output from FH and GEDMill to create my web pages.

Interesting...I am aware that there is other and much better software than FH out there for web publication purposes and will have to investigate this free one...
...one I found appeared excellent but requires MySQL database - my server uses MS SQL and I do not want to compromise things by adding more technologies. Maybe Gedmill is the answer...thanks.

Back on the original request, you could simply create a 'web' text scheme which hides all lines for private individuals, the boxes would show, but would be blank.

I've found a weird way to make boxes disappear, e.g. if the Private flag is set. However, the connecting lines between boxes remain, since the boxes are not really 'hidden'. On Diagram Options, you have to set a Boxes Record Flag Condition for the Private Flag as follows:
Box Line colour the same as the background colour,
Box Shape as 'One Step Corners',
Corner Size large compared with box size, e.g. 200mm,
both Text Area Indents set to 'Corner Size'.
This would 'work' with any Text Scheme.

Jane, thanks...
...I guess by text scheme you mean report. As mentioned I see no report that shows both ancestors and descendants (both up and down in the hierarchy).
Did I miss your point?

PeterR - thanks
I considered this but of course we want the boxes and space reclaimed.
For Living (flag) individuals I hide certain text in boxes on a condition...

Nick, just to clarify terminology: 'Text Scheme', as mentioned by Jane, is what you must have edited to hide certain text in boxes.

Thanks for clarifying Jane's point for me Peter - new user here!
As you both mentioned, text and boxes can be made invisible but this does not result in a good presentation - closed branches is the way I suspect but based on automatically on a flag...solution 1 (mark on query then close) is still the hottest for me.
Strange - I would have assumed this to be a common requirement after all reports can do it.

It's on the Wish List

It's not that highly rated though.
