Upgrading from v3 to v4

Post by lizziecallen » 07 Nov 2009 08:49

I am currently using v3 on a desktop (Vista). I have just bought a Netbook (Windows XP) and would like to be able use FH on that as well.

I have also just bought the v4 upgrade CD and want to be able to use that on both computers.

Can you suggest a step by step way to approach this? (I read that it was best to mend any broken links on my existing file first, so that's what I'm doing at the moment.)

Just to clarify you can use the download version on 2 computers as well.

What I would recommend if you want to work on both machines is to build a Project in V4 and move all media in to the Project this means you can just keep the Project Directory in 'Sync' between the two machines.

The easiest way I have found to do this is to use a free program called Dropbox.

You can move your Project Folder to the Dropbox folder and then Dropbox will automatically keep your projects synchronised between the two systems.

Please see this thread for more details on Dropbox

So step by step.
  • Fix any broken links on your file
  • If you are using Dropbox install it
  • Install V4 on your desktop
  • If using Dropbox move the Project Folder with in Dropbox folder (option from the More Tasks button)
  • Create a Project from your existing file. Wait for Dropbox to catch up.
  • Install Dropbox on your Laptop (your project will be moved down for you)
  • Install V4 on your Laptop and change the location for your projects.

Many thanks for all your advice, Jane.

Just to clarify one thing though. Would I not have to install v3 onto my laptop before trying to install the v4 upgrade disc?
