Sources Assessment

Post by makfai » 27 Oct 2009 10:49

Is there any way of adding an Assessment of a source to an entry in the Sources Pane so that the assessment will apply to all links to that source rather than having to add the assessment to each individual reference via the Property Pane?

Sources Assessment

Not really as source assessments are attached to Citations and not sources.

Personally I only use them where the assessment is different to the norm, so I am worried about the attribution of a specific census record to a person.

Sources Assessment

I use note records linked to each source, in my case *Primary, *Secondary & *Unchecked. Then BMD certificates, original parish records, original census pages etc are classed as primary, all indices, transcripts etc as secondary and all unverified information from other researchers (including member submitted LDS records) as unchecked.

Be aware though, that this is not the same as giving an assessment to the citation (which I don't do). Perhaps the most obvious example of this is a census which would not be cited as a primary source for a birth but would be for a residence or occupation. I use my system as a broad brush approach which helps me with to do lists and flagging dodgy bits of my tree.

I know I should really be assessing citations but, like many people, I learned as I went along and by the time I realised my mistake in not doing it from the outset it was too late. Life's too short for absolute perfection.

Sources Assessment

Thank you for your quick responses. I was forgetting about the distinction between source and citation. Will get the hang of this after several more years [confused]

I also agree that life is too short. I used the Sources Pane to update the TYPE field which was pretty easy but don't want to be rooting around to update the Assessment. I will edit them as I come across them

What I have already done - where the source is unconfirmed as definitely relating to that person(e.g. Birth record from BMD Index record but have not obtained Birth Cert [too expensive to get them all!]) - is just add the word 'unconfirmed' to the end of the title of the Source. That way I notice it and if it DOES get confirmed later I can just edit the title.
