Column for unique numbers in Record window

My working papers are filed in binders with a unique file reference, unrelated to FH record IDs. I would like to have these file references in a column on the Record window in FH.
The question is 'How can I create this, so these unique references can be entered manually against the individual?'
Can anyone advise me please?

Use the Custom ID. Enter your own reference using the All Tab of the Property Box and right clicking on the individual's name: Add Miscellaneous>Add Custom ID. If you like you can create a new Tab in the Property Box. See the 'How To's'.
