I've a funny feeling I saw a thread on this quite a while ago, but can't find it now. Apologies if going back over old ground.

What are the feelings of the group on single or multiple GEDCOMS ?

It strikes me it might be nice to be able to (say in the case of cousins of a line in which you are interested) to put the cousins lines in seperate GEDCOMs to avoid your own main line of interest getting clogged up with less interesting (but still important) data.

Not sure that FH can have 'symbolic links' to persons in external GEDCOMs anyway ?

I keep all 'known' related people in a single file, with another file for my unlinked people, personally I don't see the need to keep my file small, and simply use the split tree helper (or the new export option) to create partial gedcoms to share with others.

Thanks for that Jane. I guess things just get slower with larger files and there is the risk that if something goes wrong you could lose everything back to the last backup.

Do you know if it is technically possible to link to persons in an external GEDCOM file using FH4 ?

No, you can't link them.

I know of people working with 10's of thousands of people in a single database with out problems, so unless you are in to those sorts of numbers of cousins I can't see large files are a real problem.

You have put my mind at rest, I will just add them to main GEDCOM. Only up to about 2000 records, so hopefully ok
