Military records from Ancestry

Post by margarita » 06 Oct 2009 18:33

I have found various Military records (e.g. WW1 Service Records, WW1 Pension Records).

I've 'saved' them in Ancestry at the moment because I don't know what's best to do with them as far as FH is concerned.

Do I save each image separately and add them to a source for the relevant person. Or do I save them all in one document and add that to the source.

What do others do, please, & what are some of the pros and cons of different methods?

Regards,

maggie

I load each image into Media and give it a name like 'Service Record: Joe Smith, page 1' and create the date record - it might well be a period rather than a single date.

I then create a Source for each group of records eg all the Service Records for one person; and then append all the relevant images. The Source will have a similar name eg 'Service Record: Joe Smith 'Date'' and I can then create Facts to which I link the Source.

Is that helpful?

Maggie,

I pretty much do what Gerry does.

Basically, the few military documents I have found I treat as I do any other source, eg birth, marriage, death certificates, gleaning the information as Events/Attributes/Facts etc, and linking the document as Media.

Also, I print out a hard copies of the documents for my file - 'just in case' - I'm 'old school'!

On the FH Download page there are Military Fact Sets, which you may find helpful.

Thank you both for your replies.

You both confirmed what I was thinking about doing: saving each page as a media item and then linking them all to a source e.g. Military Record 234 BLOGGS Joe 1914-18.

I will then treat that source as any other as Brian says, but birth certificates etc. usually just have one image and the Service Records have several pages.

I just wanted to get things straight in my mind before I started.

Thanks again.

maggie
