Individual amp; family Queries

Post by Jenny143 » 06 Oct 2009 13:32

I am using V4 and I am very happy with it. I have one question. Is it possible to create queries which combine both individual & family data. I have created a custom query to check if I have found census details for people in my file (individuals alive at x and linked to source) but I have entered some census details as a family event and so these people obviously don't show up on the individual results set, I realise I can set up a separate query for families but it would be useful to have it all on one results set.
Any suggestions please?
Many thanks
Jenny

Individual amp; family Queries

Hi Jenny,

Just a thought - try it t'other way round. Create a FACT query and see if that supplies all known results.

Sorry, I don't have any data which has been attached as you describe to both families and individuals - so I can't check.

Hope this helps (& would be interested to know if it does )[smile]

Just to add Fact Queries are only available in V4.

Also I would really recommend, converting your Family Census events to Individual ones, as Family Census records can be very vague as there is no quick way to see who they belong to. For example do you assume a Family Census includes children who might be somewhere else.

The other way to include then is to use something like

%INDI.FAMS[1]>CENS[year=xxxx]%

which will pick up for the Head and Spouse individuals. Perhaps combined with an exists() function.

Hi Jane, Thanks for the advice, I know what you mean about family census records being vague and difficult to relate to individuals, however I only use them for the parents and the children are entered as individuals with a note to say they are with their parents (if they are). I find it is a quick way of showing that the couple are together at the time of the census. I spent a long time trying to work out the best way to do it particularly in terms of generating narrative reports and this seems to work for me. However it would be helpful to be able to link to individuals from the family property box.
