I have now uninstalled Comodo free firewall and problem is fixed.
Now using Zone Alarm Free - with no probs.

Hi - I'd just like to add my support to the Comodo theory.
I have Vista SP2 32-bit, FH 4.02 and had Comodo Internet Security free edition (can't remember version number, it was the latest one available anyway).
I had exactly the same problem with FH stopping before it started as it were, with just the Windows message 'Family Historian has stopped working.'.
Rolling back to before SP2 was installed allowed FH to run again, but this wasn't ideal. As suggested here, the problem lies with some sort of conflict between FH, Vista SP2 and Comodo.
Having switched to ZoneAlarm, FH works under SP2 without a problem.
