Version 4.02 and Vista SP2
On installing vista sp2, FH does not run.
I've uninstalled SP2 and have my FH back.
Anybody else in this situation?

Hi Steve,
I've got Vista Home Basic with SP2 installed and have had no problems (touch wood!).
Could you let us know what actually happened when you tried to run FH (which version it is), ie were there any error messages etc. One of the list-members may have had a similar problem with a solution already known.

Hi there
v 4.02.
On clicking the icon, goes straight to a windows box 'unable to run programs - would you like windows to find a solution' - which of course it doesn't.

I'm in exactly the same boat with my laptop. My desktop however appears to be fine so far (Only running trial version due to issue with key). Both run Vista, but my desktop is 64 bit, the laptop 32 bit.
And no luck with the DEP either.

Some digging around the web came up with this on the error code: '0xc0000005 is an access violation - basically something in the process is
trying to read memory it does not have access to.'
But I have the built in user access control turned off. So I'm at a loss.

If you have a virus checker please could you try turning it off temporarily and try FH again see if that helps.
Perhaps also try the 3.1.2 download over the top and see if that helps with V3.

One possibility that has come to mind is that there is an Anti-Virus program that controls program access involved in this somewhere. I have used Norton 360 for some time and that does occasionally give me silly problems such as this.
Might I suggest that you try disabling the Firewall and/or other settings for your Anti-virus program(s) and try again - with internet connection removed.
Hope this helps

I've installed v4.02 trail and no luck with firewall/virus scan off.

Interesting Jane, I missed this earlier.Jane said:

My x64 desktop seems to have no issues. But the monitor of that is the main TV, so I can't spend a lot of time on that.
My main PC is my x32 Vista, which is causing the issues. I really don't want to re-install vista on my laptop so I can have the x64 version as you can imagine. I'd much rather get it to work on x32 [grin]

I can't double check SP2 on vista as I have upgraded my laptop to Windows 7, so don't have a 32bit vista machine any more.
I have flagged the issue with Calico so hopefully they might have an idea.

I double checked everything last night:
Windows Vista x64 with SP works fine
Windows Vista x32 without SP can run FH
(but is dreadfully slow due to the absence of SP)
Windows Vista x32 with SP will not run FH at all, no matter what I try.
I hope that helps.

Could everyone who has experienced a problem running Family Historian in any context, please email support@family-historian.co.uk. Please include as many details as possible of when the problem started and what the symptoms are. Please also include full details of your PC software - e.g. Vista Service Pack 2, 32 vs. 64 bit, anti-virus software, firewall software, etc. Thank you.

Just a thought -- IE8 gave me a lot of problems with applications. Have you recently upgraded?
Version 4.02 and Vista SP2
To be honest, I'm not sure on IE8 as I only have it installed for emergencies, I always use Firefox. I couldn't tell you when it was installed. However, I only uninstalled the Servie Pack last night and it worked again, I did not uninstall IE 8 or roll back to a previouse restore point or anything. So the only change I made was to take out the SP (leaving IE8 in place) and it worked again. I go throught phases with my family history research and I'm afraid since the Service Pack came out I've not tried to use FH till about a month ago. It's only because stevebrass mentioned it worked for him that I tried it.
Simon, I have raised it, but I was naughty and raised 2 issues in 1 ticket, [#651664]. I will check the first issue of that ticket (my key problem on the desptop) tonight when I get home and update that ticket with all the relevant information of this second issue. I'll not be so naughty next time and I'll raise 2 tickets.

I am running on Version 4.02 and Vista SP2 32 bit with absolutely no problems at all. I also use IE8 and Kaspersky AntiVirus.
Version 4.02 and Vista SP2
I've had contact from FH support. They are definitly looking at this with some interest. I'll let you know what worked for me once we've solved it. At the moment, Comodo looks like it might be the culprit (firewall & virus software)
Version 4.02 and Vista SP2
Turns out uninstalling SP2 created some fatal errors on my machine and I ended up having to reinstall windows on the laptop. I went with 64 bit that's on the desktop, so I should have no more issues.
