How to get multimedia records back to links?

When I upgraded to 4.0.2 all my multimedia links were converted into multimedia records .... This is a real pain since I like to keep my source documents tightly coupled with the source records and use the multimedia records only for illustrations .... Does anyone know of a way to undo this and get the records back as links without re-creating each one individually (since I have several thousand mm files)?

I would imagine they were all Multimedia Records in the previous version you used but you probably didn't realise it. A link from a source to an image would have actually been to a multimedia record. A multimedia record is really just a link to an image file on your hard disk.

Hiya Nick,

No they were links ... in GEDCOM terms they appeared as sub-lines of the Source and didn't appear as GEDCOM OBJE/multimedia records ... Now they have been converted into GEDCOM records, so get muddled in with all my other illustrations ... with so many files I find it important to keep them organised and having them all lumped in together makes it much harder to see what's what.

So ... any suggestions for reversing the links? (Or even importing into a project without them being converted)

I believe all media is changed to records, automatically, I suspect this is due to the media window.

Personally I never linked any thing locally as media records seemed more logical to me so did not notice the change.

You could try my tool to add keywords to your media so you can filter out the non-photos.

OK that's for the info. Looks like I'll have to live with it [frown] Keywords isn't really the type of solution I was after.

A question tho' ... If multimedia links are no longer being supported then why is the 'Add Local Multimedia Object to this Record' option still available? Surely this just confuses the issue and encourages adding of links which will no doubt be discarded in the next version too.
