smart surname sort

Post by lyulph » 14 Aug 2009 21:36

Is there an easy way of sorting names in lists of individuals such that name prefixes (de/la/von/el/de la/st/ etc. are ignored for the purposes of the sort but are still included in the display/ For example 'Du Maurier' would appear in the name starting with an M.

Not that I can think of, you could of course add an attribute for the 'sort name' and use an expression to add a column for sorting.

The GEDCOM 5.5 standard defines a specific tag for Surname-Prefix with the following explanation:
Surname prefix or article used in a family name. Different surname articles are separated by a comma, for example in the name 'de la Cruz', this value would be 'de, la'.
FH (v4.0.2) allows you to input such a surname prefix but as far as I know, FH makes no automatic use of it, e.g. for sorting.

Perhaps there should be a new Wish-List request for the default name sorting to ignore any part of the Surname value that is also specified as the Surname-Prefix value. This would have no impact on most names that have no prefix, and would allow the Surname to include the prefix, thus keeping all other processing the same.
