FH Crashes

I wonder if anyone can help me resolve  the problem of F H  fatal errors

Following the installation of the upgrade  4.0.2 the programme has consistently crashed inevitably  resulting in the loss of data and duplication.

Whilst I have made every effort to save all entries individually one often forgets.
It is very frustrating.

Is my only alternative to uninstall and re-install version 4
Regards

It would be worth contacting support@family-historian.co.uk for more help and provide them with as much information as you can, eg

In the mean time do you have the error messages you get when in crashes?

Can you reproduce the actions which cause the crash?

Have you tried running with out your virus checker on? Does it still crash?

I have similar problems with FH (tho' not quite as frequent as yours sound) and they also occurred with V3 so I'm not convinced its due to a new feature and is probably inherent in the FH core.

When the crash occurs there is no error message - the whole program just disappears instantly. I have my auto-save on for every 5 mins to minimise the damage but I still get caught out now and then.

Would it be possible to add more robust error handling into the next version so that:
- exceptions are handled more gracefully with either an error log and/or a pop-up error message
- a restore/repair function is available when re-loading the program after a crash

There is one other serious bug which may/may not be related to the crash ... The symptoms are when clicking on a tab in a property box no data is shown on the tab - just blank space. Once this occurs on one tab it spreads so that all tabs become 'infected'. From experience I know that once this happens a crash will occur soon so as soon as I see it I do a Save, Exit and re-open which clears the problem.

I have reported the problem to Calico support who suggested it may be a graphics card problem but I cannot find any indication that this is so and I don't experience this sort of problem with any other program.

Have you tried the latest drivers? or gone back to Calico, in my experience they are keen to fix any problems with code which cause windows errors or unexpected shut downs, how ever as with any problem the key to fixing it is reproducing it, so a series of events which cause the problem consistently really help.

I had a run of email conversations with Calico but still haven't resolved it.
