Sharing Files between computers with backup

Post by Jane » 11 Aug 2009 17:25

I have been experimenting with DropBox and have been very impressed so far.

It's easy to use and works well for me.  You can have 2Gb of space free and any file changes are automatically 'synced' to other computers with the same sign on.

So what I did was
  • Registered for  My Dropbox
  • Installed the software on both my computers
  • Moved my Project Folder into the Dropbox on my main machine
  • Left it a while
  • Checked and my Laptop had my files
  • Now which ever machine I change my data on, it is copied to the other machine automatically and as a bonus,  dropbox makes automatic backups of any changes.
  • If your files are over 2Gb in size you can have a paid for account if you want.
So far it's doing exactly what it says on the tin.  Don't try and use it on a dial up line though.

Sharing Files between computers with backup

I am also experimenting with Dropbox.I installed it on my laptop which is my own computer and then set up Dropbox on another computer.I have moved the project file into Dropbox and work on it from there. It seems to handle the media files OK but not the Gedcom.I did some work on the file from the other computer working from the file I had in Dropbox. When I reopened it on my laptop I then had 2 Gedcom files (one said it was a conflicting file). On checking the 2 files separately I found the information I had in both was different but cannot see how as I was supposedly working on the same file.Has anyone else had this problem?[confused]

Remember you need to give Dropbox time to move the file between the computers. It does not move the file, while the program is open so if you have FH still open it won't move the file till you close FH.

I have waited 24 hours and Dropbox says files are up to date but I still end up with 2 gedcoms, one of which is a conflicting copy and does not seem to have the same information in it. All a bit confusing!

Strange I have had not problems with gedcom files. Perhaps try deleteing one and use the web interface to purge the file.
