Copy between ged files

Post by donone » 04 Aug 2009 12:14

If I have two projects open is it possible to take a copy of a person and their details in one go and put it into the other project please?

I am thinking of restarting my project but don't wish to re-key a lot of data that is correct.

Not directly, but what you could do is flag the ones you want to copy and strip everything else from a copy of the file and then merge in the flagged people.

The problem with just copying in is that you need to sort the family relationships which is why using merge is probably easier.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll experiment with it after backing up.

See wish list item 319 (copy/paste between instances of FH) and vote for it if you think it would be useful to have this facility.

Done!
Is there no way to do this by a bodge into the gedcom text file, since the copied data appears to be complete?
This would really assist me after having set up a system as a beginner and realised too late that there were better ways.

You can certainly and copy and paste data within the GEDCOM files themselves. However, as Jane suggested, you need to be a bit careful as the individual may well have links to family records (FAMS where they are a spouse in the family record and FAMC where they are a child in a family) so you could remove those or copy the family records over too. However, you would need to make sure you don't already have other family or individual ids in the file that are the same as the ones being copied in. There may also be links to notes, sources and images which would need to be dealt with too.

Best left well alone I deduce!
Thanks for the additional warning.
