I feel sure the following must have been covered extensively previously, but I just can't find the topic thread. Can anyone point me in the right direction, please?
Briefly, I have two 'Smith' children whom, following their parent's splitting up, were brought up by their aunt and uncle, the 'Jones', although they were never officially adopted by the 'Jones'.
Later in adulthood, one of the 'Smith' children officially changed their surname to that of his aunt and uncle... the 'Jones', and then married, going on to have his own 'Jones' family etc.
How do I record the surname change from 'Smith' to 'Jones'. I'm using FH v4.

Many thanks to both of you for the links.
Currently I have 'John Smith' recorded as a son of his birth parents, as this is a fact. However, his parents split up and 'John Smith' was brought up from a young age by his aunt and uncle, the 'Jones', adopting their surname when he was an adult, as he felt they were his 'real' parents, although he was never officially adopted by his aunt and uncle.
Then 'John Smith' got married as a 'Jones' and went on to have his own family as a 'Jones'.
How do I record all of this?... in essence 'John Smith' feels he has two families... his birth family and those who brought him up and whom he quite justly calls his mum and dad, the aunt and uncle 'Jones'. How do I get FH to link 'John Smith/Jones' to two families, and should I?
This is the first time in my research I have had to think about issues of 'double parentage' for an individual, so I would be most grateful for some experienced guidance before I start to record all of 'John Smith's' family history as a 'Smith' and a 'Jones' - I don't want to go down the wrong route as I have ancestors and descendants for both the 'Smith' and 'Jones' families to record.
Once again, thank you for all of your help.

There are several ways of doing this.
Whilst in the focus window, highlight your individual & choose 'add more relatives'.
'Add parent'. This will probably say 'individual already has parents. Add another set?' 'Yes'
'Create new record or link existing record'.
The relationship can be set by highlighting the individual, right click, 'Relationship to parents'.
Choose from foster, step etc.
Similar adding of parents can also be done from 'Add' on the main menu.
Come back if this didn't make sense!

When you get to thinking about how you work with this in a diagram, the following may provide ideas.

Thank you ejp!
Your explanation is clear and concise and will, I am sure, help others in the same situation - and thank you, too, for posting the diagram.
I just knew that somehow FH must have the ability to record two families linked to one individual, as the scenario of a birth family splitting up and their children being raised by another couple is not at all uncommon.
I just lack the experience and knowledge of how it could be done... but I'm learning!
Best wishes,
Brian
