Should I switch to FH?
I currently use Family Origins for recording my family tree. The owners are going to stop developing it. I want to know if it worth my while switching programs to Family Historian?
Is Family Historian good? What are its pitfalls?
Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Simon

Should I switch to FH?
I have not used Origins, but I am very impressed with FH, I came from Family Tree Maker, so the ability to use attached photos and the query system were what drew me to the product.
I particuarly like :-
The Querys and the new Reports option
The all relations Chart
The lists
Limitations at the moment
The lack of multiple fonts on charts
No zoom function on Media.
You should note I am biased towards FH, as I think it was £50 very well spent.

Should I switch to FH?
Hi
My wife and I are very new to this program only a couple of days in fact up to now we are very impressed at its vesatility in the transfer of the data, files in the gedcom form were quite easy to copy across without the of infomation .. The transfer of the picture in the original Family Tree Maker have proved a little more of a problem ...which I hope that i will be able to resolve with more reading and perhaps a little help from admin, One draw back that I have found ( although it may be available )is a spell check or grammer check for us uneducated
I think it is not as cheap as some but it is worth the extra for the easy of use and the ability to work on several individuals

Should I switch to FH?
Welcome.
Unfortunately FTM does not export its pictures. As the way FH stores pictures is far better than FTM, what I did was to return to the original scanned images and used the partial picture linking to re-build the picture links.
The lack of a spell checker is a bit of a problem, all I do is write my notes in Word or TextPad, spell check them and paste them back in to FH.

Hello Jane (Admin )
I had gathered that the importing of pictures from FTM was going to be a bit of a problem My wif has a lot (i mean a lot) of photographs to re-enter !!**
We had already decided to use word to write the text then copy & paste Also tried to copy and paste an image into the notes ..without any success

Images need to be attached as Multimedia objects. I suggest playing around with one or two first to get the feeling. One important thing is you do need to make small images for the Trees.
FH will add the pictures to your reports when you print them so you do not paste them into the notes. Also you can link pictures to events and sources as well as people and marriages. If you do not have the pictures outside of FTM you will have a bit of work to extract them. If you have 'large' originals link to them.
You may find the following animation usful. Although it is almost 1Mb in size it shows adding multimedia objects and linking them to people

Should I switch to FH?
I only got my FH on Friday and already I have imported my family tree and that of my husband from Generations. Talk about easy! I have never done anything like it before and it worked a treat. Thanks for making such a user-friendly program.
Should I switch to FH?
I have been using Family Tree Maker, having switched to that from Generations, which does not work properly with Windows XP, Transfering pictures (I have a lot too!) was the worst pain. Having done that for many of my sources, can I list the sources with the pictures. Would a custom query be the way?

You can show pictures attached to sources on both the source report and on Family Group Sheets and Individual Summaries.
I have used the Source Report to send copy documents to people after changing the image size to fit right across the page.

I really should realise that mostly features I think are missing are to be found. Between sending my mail and receiving your reply, I had sorted out the sources report, which of course can be configured to produce anything you want! I'll try and look before I leap into queries![cry]
