I have version 3 and have just loaded the version 4.0.0 update disc. When I opened my original GEDCOM file after the update and go to my ascendants/descendants SOME of the pictures are still showing on my family but others have now been replaced by a large X. I have tried replacing the pictures which were not there as I did when inserting them in the first place but still the X is showing where the picture was. Yesterday when I used version 3 EVERY picture was on show. Help please.

Did you create a project? Try opening your original GEDCOM in FH4 and see if the files are correct and if not use the Work With External File links to check them.
Try opening your V3 file are the links correct in that one?
When you created a project did you copy the media over to the folder or leave it where it was?

I have opened the Works with External Links and it opened at the last time I modified. I opened the file links to the photos and noticed that all I can see on the family tree are ok but all those that had a X through them also have an X through them on the file links.
I can't find out how to access the Version 3 files.
I didn't copy any media files.
Hope this makes sense.

In external links click on the highest directory with an x on it.
Next click on the button Re-Map and then re-map to another location, if you are not using the media directory.
A windows explore type window will appear and you then pick the directory where your images are and that will fix the links.

In external links I clicked on the highest directory with an x on it and this was the photo folder title. All photos in the folder have an x on them. I clicked on remap and then remap to another location. What opened up was Browse for Folder with My Documents,My Computer and My Network Places showing. I then went to My Documents and then My Pictures. I tried using one of the original folders but that didn't work so I tried by creating a new folder but that didn't work also as all the xs are still there.

I have just noticed something after opening up Family Historian again. It looks as though I must have opened a Project when Version 4 first came up because when I opened Working with External Files this time I have noticed from File Links I have a folder called Project Data Folder. It then says Media folder and in that NONE of the photos have an X on them. How do get this now on to my ascendants/descendants screen please.

I am not sure what your sequence of events was.
Personally I would be tempted if you have not done a great deal of work on the current file since you start V4.
To delete your project and recreate it from your V3 file not importing the media, if you want to keep them out of the project folder.
Personally I copied all mine to the media folder to keep everything together.

Sorry Jane but I'm completely confused now. I have deleted the project from V4 and started again. I have opened a new project. It says do I wish to import from another source and asks me for a file name. The version 3 one which I last edited on 11-07-09 is the one I put into this block earlier but it has half the photos with an x on them and so do all the previous files in version 3. I have tried just copying all my photos and then trying to put them in the multimedia but it doesn't let me paste them there. Can you help with this transfer of my photos into mulitmedia of version 4 please? Then I'll start the whole family tree from scratch.

I am really busy with my day job for the next few days. If you can hang on till the middle of the week, if you have broadband I could try a remote connection to see if I can work out what's happening.
