Using icons and flags to show BMD's

Post by Ebor337 » 14 Jul 2009 10:24

Hi there all,

First post so go easy on me.

I have recently bought FH as I was frustrated with the functionalilty of FTM - so far I have been mightlily impresses, so much so that I am redoing my whole family tree to make use of FH's features (it's also a good reminder and have actually found a few new potential leads becasue of this).

Anyway, I am just wondering how to add icons to my family tree for BMD certificates. I have gone through the tutorials and easily added the census icons, but I appear to be totally flummoxed for BMD's.

CAn anyone help?

I have searched but everything avaiable doesn't seem to help (or I just can't get my head round it).

Many thanks in advance,

Ebor

Using icons and flags to show BMD's

Hi and welcome to FHUG.

To get icons for BMD Certs, the first job is to work out a way to identify which people have them.

You can use a flag to this setting it manually or using a query for example
So for instance if all your Birth Certificate sources have a type of 'Birth Certificate' you can do a quick query to find all records where

%INDI.BIRT[1].SOUR[1]>_TYPE% contains 'Birth Certificate' and then use the Query Options to set the flag for use in the Icons settings.

In V4 you should in theory be able to use an expression like

=ContainsText(%INDI.BIRT.SOUR>_TYPE%,'Birth Certificate',EXT)

directly in the Diagram, but I can not get the formating correct at the moment.

Thanks for your reply Jane,

So as I am starting again enetering all my details in FH (rather than just importing), I guess it will be easier to just add the BMD flags as I am going along?

I will have to have a play about with the flags then, as still a bit confusing!

Thanks again.

If you have not already seen it check out the 'How to' for Birth Certificate Entry in the Knowledge Base

[wiki]how_to:recording_details_from_a_birth_certificate[/wiki]

Although written for V3 most is the same, it covers auto source citation which is a huge time saver when starting from sources.

Double check you are using the flags as conditions for the icon with the same names as the ones you set. If you use the drop down you should be able to see the names you have used.

I did manage to get coloured 'dots' showing for BMDs and a little cross for children who died young - great.

Then I wanted to send the diagram to someone and didn't want the icons showing. The only way I could find was to remove the condition in the diagram options. Then later I had to re create them all again. Is there a simple way of 'turning off' the icons displayed in a diagram? I couldn't find it in diagram options.

To keep a copy with out icons.

Open the Boxes option and delete them all, BUT untick the save as Default.

Next then use the Diagram -> save Diagram as -> Custom Diagram type and call it 'All Relations - No Icons', or what ever you want, then when you want no icons instead of pressing the button, select View/Custom Diagram/ and select your diagram from the list.

'Open the Boxes option and delete them all, BUT untick the save as Default. '

Because such an instruction is necessary (the highlighted BUT) it shows that the default setting of the 'Save as Default' box is counter intuitive.

See http://www.fhug.org.uk/wishlist/wldispl ... lwlref=273 if you agree and would like it changed.
