Creating a New Fact

Post by gaddabout » 08 Jun 2009 16:48

I would like to create a new Event called Migration based on the existing events Immigration and Emigration in the Standard Fact Set.
When I create the New Fact it results in the standard text box template with text fields for Date, Age, Place, Address, Note and Sentence but does not have a 'To' field, which Immigration and Emigration do.
Any guidance on how to achieve this would be most welcome.

This is not possible as FH implements the Immigration and Emigration events as exceptions to all the other events.

In effect, you don't really need both events because FH keeps track of the from/to place in the same event.

Gedcom has both events because it only allowed one place per event and so needs the two events. To follow the Gedcom spec 100% you need both events so that if the data gets transferred to another researcher they don't lose the 2nd place which is non-standard Gedcom.

If you really want to have a single event covering the whole journey you could place one of the places in the cause or address fields.

Thanks for that insight Jon.

I have recently come across an ancestor who sailed between England and the American continent no less than on 10 occasions. With, a departure date and location, and, an arrival date and location, to cater for, the Immigration / Emigration format seemed well suited with a name change to Migration or Travel or similar.

I guess if we are not allowed access to that particular format I need to rethink a tidy way to record these events. *sigh*
