I am still using V3 as I am in the process of producing charts for a publication & don't want the hassle of working out a new system - it has taken me a fair while to manage getting what I want from V3.
However, I plan to upgrade when I have everything ready, so that I can transfer charts to PDF format, & pick up on any other 'tweaks' which would be of help in the final product, for eg changing the thickness of connecting lines etc
In particular, I have looked in vain for a way to produce a name index (surname first) which is not tied to a narrative report.
Can anyone tell me if this will be possible with V4?, & also possibly summarise for me the extra enhancements that will be available for printing charts?

If you are looking for a Name index for specific charts, FH can't do it directly, but you could for each chart simply select all the boxes (hit the world icon can then draw around the whole chart and add all the people to a named list. You could then export the result via a query to Word/Excel or similar to build the index.
To quote the What's new document:
To quote the What's new document:
Charts and diagrams have had numerous improvements, including new more flexible alignment options for boxes. Text can now be any colour (previously colours were restricted). There is a new move within row/column option to allow better use to be made of space. As previously mentioned, charts can be saved as PDF files, and even as one-page PDFs. There are new features for power users, and other enhancements.

Thanks for the info re diagrams in V4.
Getting a name index sounds very involved. I don't just want an index for a particular diagram, but for all the people in them (ie about 650+). I can't understand why I can't get a list of all the individuals on the system into an index, when I can see them all on the records screen. I could then just delete the ones I don't need.
Also, the majority of them have a caste/group label - can I get a list from that?
PS this is probably a question which belongs to V3 forum; shall I put it there?

Oh you just want a list of people, I though you wanted an index cross referenced to the diagrams they were in.
Just select View / Standard Queries / All individuals.
Then click the save button to save as a comma separated file you can open in Excel or other spreadsheet to edit as you want.

Thanks Jane, that's great

Actually, just tried it & I can't see how to save it as a comma sep file etc. I'm worried it produces a complete version of the whole FH file.
Could I produce a list using the caste/group label instead?

To save as a CSV file, click on the save icon.

If you want to select some of the people you need to create a custom query, and use the Row tab to add a selection for the people you want. Queries are covered in detail in the Manual. There are also a couple of relevant How To's in the Knowledge base.

Thanks Jane
I should be able to sort it now with one of the methods you outline

I've created a custom query based on groups/caste, which has come out great. First time I've used this facility (there's always something new to learn!).
The list looks haphazard though - don't know what it is based on. Will it put the list in alphabetical order for me ie surname, then first name within that, or do I have to do that when I have saved it another format?

Two ways of doing this.
Either click on the header for the Name column, or in the query on the Columns tab select the name or record column and select that as the column to sort by, using the drop down list to select 'ascending'
The second method will work automatically every time you run the query.
