Project Files
Here is an annoying little feature.
Family Historian V4 registers its project files. Normally this would mean that double-clicking the file would launch the program and open the file.
Instead Family Historian reports an error and then takes you to the project manager screen, where you can select the project (same file?) and open it with Family Historian.
Am I missing something here?

It doesn't do that when I try it. If I double-click on a project file (with .fh_proj extension) FH is opened and opens the project. Does this happen with all project files when you try it? What about the sample project?
Just for interest, if you double-click on any .ged file, FH should open it. And if the file is part of a project, FH should detect that, and open the project. So if you have project, you should be able to double-click on either the project file, or - one folder further into the project - the GEDCOM file.

Hi Simon
Thanks for the reply.
I double-click the .fh_proj file and it opens Family Historian. Immediately I get an error dialog which says 'Unrecognised file format. (new line) If you are trying to insert a picture, video, document or other multimedia file into Family Historian, you should click on the Insert menu and choose the appropriate menu item. To restore from a backup, use Restore on the File menu.'
The only selection option is OK, clicking this opens the Project Window. Selecting the same project then works.[confused]
If I double-click a .GED file it does indeed open FH with no problems.
I'm using Vista and FH 4.02
Regards

Hi Simon
On the second part of your question. If I click on the GEDCOM file within the project it only opens the GEDCOM file - it doesn't have Family Historian Project in the Title Bar.

Check that your .fh_proj file is not corrupted. It doesn't contain much except the following two lines.
[Family Historian]
Version=4

Hi Jon
All of my .fh_proj files are Ok (I'm researching 20 or so different families)- I'm struggling to understand what is wrong. As you say the project file contains only those 2 lines, it's giving me a real headache!
Thanks anyway

rodders - I have done a little more experimenting and I find that if I double-click on a project file under XP, it works OK; but if I do the same under Vista I get the same message you do. Also, although if you double-click on the project's GEDCOM file it will load within FH, even under Vista (as you found), it appears to load as a standalone GEDCOM file - i.e. FH fails to recognise that it is part of a project and load it as such (which it is supposed to do). So, more investigation is needed to work out why this is happening. Meanwhile, I think for now you need to load projects from within FH. If it helps at all, under 4.0.2, the number of recently-used-GEDCOM files that FH can remember has increased from 4 to 9.

Hi Simon
Phew!! - I thought I was going loopy for a while!
Maybe the project .GED file should be referenced in the .fh_proj file (kinda like a .ini reference)
I normally do open FH first, but in that particular instance I double clicked the fh_proj file instead.

Double clicking on the project file or on the Gedcom file in the project data folder both fire up the project in FH fine for me under Vista. Two possible caveats are that I only have one project (having deleted the sample project) and that I have moved the project folder.

Hi Patrick
I have moved the Project Folder too - to a USB pen. You can tell if you have started the Project - if you have it says Family Historian Project followed by the .GED filename on the Title Bar of the window.
Thanks
