Customised tabs on Property Box

Post by jonno697 » 25 Jun 2009 10:34

Hello to you,
Thanks for info and I think I managed to complete the tasks, no error messages anyway. I also moved the zip files to my e drive where my program is and that said they were unzipped okay.
Now when I run FH how do I get the new 'tab' up as per the photo as I can't seem to find it. I've looked in the customize view and nothing seems to be there?
Apologise for being a pain, but I agree with you re FH doing something re this to help. My view would either they like and allow people customising or they don't, and if they do then it should be made a lot easier for this to be done with novices like me. Perhaps the customisation could be sent to them and then they send it out in an update etc.
Anyway thanks for your help so far.
John

It's unusual to have the program installed to E and I was not aware you could change the location of Program Data easily on Vista. Can you do a search on your system for the PB-INDI.fhdata file, I would expect to see two copies of the file from the Family Historian install, on in Program Files and one in Application Data or Program Data depending on your OS. It's the one in Program Data/Appication data you need to replace.

Remember that this initial release was not designed for users to share layouts, rather for people to customise their own, so at the moment we need to use this undocumented complex method. Hopefully a later release will add Export and Import for Tab data.

Customised tabs on Property Box

Hello
Firstly I use XP and not vista.
I've run a search and found 2 as you thought
Both on the e drive: one in EFamily Historian property box; and the other in
E Docs and settings all users app data and both are 5kg in size. As far as I'm aware after following the above info the app dat file is the one I've changed.
If so should I be able to see a tab as in the image above or not? If not how do I get the tab etc?
Regards john

If you have over-written the correct file you should see the tab. I would expect the file in app data to be 4.71Kb and the one in Program files to be smaller.

If you open the file in app data with a text editor do you see the section for the Military tab?

Hello,
Yes i think so, I've got loads of gobbleygook but with two entries one mentions military and the other census so I'm assuming thats what you mean? However the app data file seems to be in a different folder to the one with the actual FH program in, does that make a differnce? They are both on the same drive though.

My only other suggestion is to add a tab manually using FH and see if that appears in the file.

Just been studying the files involved in this, to experiment.
Everything seems fine until the INDI file. I cannot seem to grasp where the definitions came from or how they have been generated, because they don't appear in the Data Reference list.
e.g. Item13=CUSTOM-'Marks/Scars',Y,'INDI._ATTR-MARKSSCARS[1]','Marks/Scars:',0,0,50,N,50,F
I would be grateful for a little more assistance.

The _ATTR- bit tells you this is a custom attribute. You can find the details in the custom fact set which you installed earlier in the process.

I think this 'addon' is great! just what was needed. However, I am having one smallish problem. I have entered the military details for one of my ancestors and that looks great. When I run a narrative report for that person, everything seems to look OK except for the following:

'His Custom Attribute was 'Tailor''

All the other events and attributes seem to be OK and are described properly but not his trade.

Can you suggest a solution to correct this please?

If you check your Fact Set in the Tools menu you should be able to customise the sentence on the Trade Fact.

Perhaps this isn't the right place to ask, but it's related.

Is there any way I can use just the military tab in this set and remove the census one, as I use the Gedcom Census add-on by Nick Walker?

Thanks.

Never mind, figured it out using the instructions on editing from the first page.

Thanks, annettelindahutton, for creating this in the first place. :)
