Record ID Assignment

Hello, using Legacy software for years, but using the trial of FH 4.0. I exported to GED from Legacy, then imported successfully ALL records to FH, with the Record ID's being kept the same. I have no gaps in record id numbers because of the way Legacy assigns them.

Have a question on Individual Record ID's. How are deleted ID's handled? Are they reused? I entered some people, then deleted (intentionally) an lower ID number person, then added a new person and the ID number merely ascended to the next highest. Legacy has an option to reuse any deleted IDs (RINs to Legacy).

Does FH have such an option? You see I never renumber my ID numbers since tied to some other files. I've looked through config options and haven't found a parameter to control this.

Thanks,

Ron

FH does not reuse numbers.

If you want you can use the Tools/Work With record identifiers to copy and change IDs, if you want to.

I can't personally see any reason to reuse numbers. There are an infinite amount of numbers available so there's no particular need to recycle them.

Also if you tie records to other files (or take your file into a database) you wouldn't want to re-use numbers as it would invalidate any work you did elsewhere

Actually, this isn't a problem, because anytime I delete a person, it's likely an error, and I delete any associated media files as well.

Looks like there's no way to reassign the unused ID's; only 'custom id's which is really not what I need.

To properly use FH, I would need to transition away from the filenaming with embedded ID numbers though.  I only did this with Census records, but I have over 500 of them in an 11,000 person file.

Thanks,
