reading V4 files on V3

At present I have V3. If a relative makes a GED file with V4 and sends it to me, wil I still be able to read it with my V3??

Yes you can but there might be a few issues since there have been some changes in how FH handles Gedcoms.

Primarily they are same sex 'marriages', multiple text from source fields in source records, and multimedia filenames. For the same sex issue, when exporting the Gedcom from V4 your relative will need to set for standard Gedcom. For the multiple text in source record which is more related to sending the file back to v4 from v3 issue, use my program FHTextFix http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cg ... dCom&id=15 available in the Gedcom section of the Downloads area. For the multimedia filenames, if you don't use projects then FH v4 will use 'absolute'* filenames which is what v3 uses otherwise there might be problems in v3 viewing the multimedia files.

* absolute means that all folders are included to identify the location of the file, relative means only the folders different between the current folder and the file's folder are included. Examples: Absolute C:Documents and SettingsJonMy DocumentsMy Family TreeMy Gedcom.ged and Relative ....My Family TreeMy Gedcom.ged
