Novice at work in need of some help

Hi all
I am new to FH, and totally hooked on family history. I have totally exhausted my families memories. Please can anyone advise me which are the best WWW site to get data birth death etc.
Thank you in advance, I am sure i will be asking more questions soon.

Without listing them all again if you use the Links > Resources in the menu on the left there are about a dozen sites that may be of use to you.

Probably a good starting off point for dates of birth etc would br FreeBMD but there are two things that you will need to bear in mind:

Firstly this site is not 100% complete so if you do not find who you are looking for then they may not be in the database.
Secondly this will only give you the quarter in which they were born - not the exact date of birth. The information on this site will allow you to send to the GRO for a birth certificate (£7 a time). To the best of my knowledge there are no sites that will give an exact date of birth - and if there was you almost certainly would have to pay![frown]

Other good sites for approximate dates of birth are the census sites - they will tell in which year somebody was born - but these can be inaccurate so do not rely on them 100%

I know that most of this does not, at first sight, sound very encouraging but as you will find out that is all part of the fun [smile]

The Ancestral File, I.G.I. & Pedigree Resource File can 'sometime' give unexpected results! At least the odd date discovered might be cross-referenced to a Quarter from the GRO or FreeBMD.
